After winning the inaugural Murtaugh Cup race in 2008, Navy will be looking to break a seven-race losing streak to Princeton and recapture the trophy from the Tigers on Saturday. Last spring in a three-team meet on Lake Carnegie, Princeton held off Navy with 6:44.6 to 6:59.9 victory in the first varsity eight competition. Racing alongside Columbia, Princeton and Navy then went one-two in the second and third varsity eight events. In the fourth and fifth varsity races, the Mids finished ahead of the Tigers by 15-plus seconds in both competitions.
The Murtaugh Cup is named after the former Princeton and U.S. lightweight rowing coach. All-time, the Tigers hold a 7-1 advantage over the Mids in the Murtaugh Cup series.
Navy began its 2015-16 season by racing in five competitions in the fall. The first varsity boat’s best finish occurred at the Navy Day Regatta as Navy earned a second-place result in an 11-boat field. At the Head of the Charles, the Mids finished 10th overall versus a field of open lightweight participants.
